Comprised of four provinces—Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Newfoundland and LabradorAtlantic Canada offers everything from majestic seaside scenery to lush, green forests. Whether after an urban holiday in one of the province's cosmopolitan centres or a wilderness escape in the area's striking national and provincial parks, visitors will be able to tour fascinating sights and attractions no matter where they are in Atlantic Canada.

PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND

Famous for its rich history, breathtaking scenery, fresh seafood and of course the loveable, chatty, red-haired orphan Anne Shirley, Prince Edward Island is a global tourist destination. Charlottetown, the province's capital and largest city, shares with visitors an array of historical, cultural and scenic attractions. Charlottetown is regarded as the birthplace of Confederation and has a range of sites where visitors can learn about the monumental 1864 Charlottetown Conference that changed the country's future.

While there are plenty of attractions to visit in Charlottetown, there are a multitude of other places on the island worth discovering as well. Summerside is the province's second largest city and offers a diverse selection of attractions and festivals, including the seafood lovers' Summerside Lobster Carnival. Anne fans will be eager to visit Cavendish to see the Green Gables House (Montgomery's childhood home) and the historical amusement park Avonlea Village. North of Cavendish is Prince Edward Island National Park, which offers spectacular beaches, sandstone cliffs and sand dunes. Basin Head Provincial Park is also a popular recreational spot with its sandy Basin Head Beach.

NOVA SCOTIA

Latin for New Scotland, Nova Scotia does indeed bear a striking resemblance to the landscape of Scotland with its picturesque highlands, serene lakes and ocean views. Halifax, Nova Scotia's capital city, is centrally located and offers major attractions such as the Citadel, Pier 21, the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic and the leafy urban escape of the Halifax Public Gardens. Not far from Halifax is the postcard icon Peggy's Cove, the setting of one of the most photographed lighthouses in the world. The port town of Lunenburg, with its captivating architecture dating back to the late 1700s and early 1800s, is also a photographer's favourite.

Connected to mainland Nova Scotia by the Canso Causeway, Cape Breton Island should definitely be included on the must-see list. The city of Sydney is the largest centre in Cape Breton and a vibrant hub with its assortment of shops, restaurants and attractions such as the Cape Breton Centre for Heritage and Science. Visitors who want to see some of the island's amazing countryside will enjoy a leisurely drive along the Cabot Trail, a 298-km (185-mi) loop that connects charming communities, colourful foliage and the Cape Breton Highlands National Park.

NEW BRUNSWICK

Dramatic cliffs, deep, green forests, grassy riverbanks and sandy beaches are among the scenic features that make up New Brunswick's diverse topography. Visitors eager to admire some of the province's versatile beauty can pick from a bundle of national and provincial parks such as Hopewell Rocks Provincial Park, Fundy National Park and Kouchibouguac National Park.

Although New Brunswick is perfect for a scenic holiday, it also offers a cornucopia of urban centres abundant with attractions. Moncton, nicknamed "Hub City," is centrally located and serves as a great base from which to explore the province. Moncton boasts an impressive medley of family attractions such as the water wonderland of Magic Mountain Waterpark and the curious optical illusion of Magnetic Hill. Fredericton, the province's capital city, features an assortment of art galleries, museums, parks and intriguing neighbourhoods like the Historic Garrison District. The city of Saint John is located southeast of Fredericton on the Bay of Fundy and features a mix of historical and natural attractions such as the mesmerizing Reversing Falls.

NEWFOUNDLAND & LABRADOR

Rocky cliffs, icebergs, scenic drives, fascinating history and fun festivals are just a few of the perks to visiting Newfoundland and Labrador. St. John's, the provincial capital and Newfoundland and Labrador's largest city, offers a bounty of historical and cultural attractions like the Signal Hill National Historic Site, which was the reception point of the first transatlantic wireless signal, and The Rooms, home to the provincial archives, an art gallery and a museum. The city is also known for its lively nightlife with areas like the colourful George Street, said to have the most pubs and bars per square foot in North America. Mount Pearl, Conception Bay South, Corner Brook, Grand Falls-Windsor, Paradise and Gander are a few of the Island of Newfoundland's other larger centres packed with attractions.

One of Newfoundland's major drawcards is its breathtaking natural scenery, which can be seen in parks like Terra Nova National Park and Gros Morne National Park. The mainland portion of the province, Labrador, is also home to spectacular scenery with towering mountains and translucent lakes. In parks like Torngat Mountains National Park visitors can view some of Labrador's beautiful, rugged scenery and wildlife like polar bears and caribou. Happy Valley-Goose Bay and Labrador City are the largest centres in Labrador and offer urban attractions such as museums, parks and art galleries.
