As part of the festivities to mark the 1000th anniversary of Leif Ericson's arrival at L'Anse aux Meadows in the year 2000, groups of Viking re-enactors from Europe and North America were invited to Norstead, a replica port of trade located near L'Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site. One of those groups, Jomsvikings, from Great Britain, provided demonstrations of Viking duels.

The captains of Viking ships greeted the crowd as they walked along the shoreline at Norstead, following the vessels' arrival there on July 28, 2000. The fleet of Viking ships and their crews were greeted by costumed re-enactors and thousands of visitors in a ceremony designed to mark the 1,000th anniversary of Leif Ericson's journey to Vinland.
